GMC to Take on the Wrangler, Says Top Designer

With the phasing out of the Toyota FJ Cruiser, the Jeep Wrangler faces little competition in the world of mid-size off-road vehicles. With its quality automotive parts and rugged style, the Wrangler continues to dominate the market year after year with competitors coming and going. Even those with auto parts that rival the quality of the Wrangler can never seem to overtake the Jeep model on the market.

But GMC is reportedly about to try!

Before the phasing out of Hummer, GMC had plans to incorporate the rugged body and autoparts found in the off-road line into a smaller vehicle that could directly compete with the Wrangler. Those plans and the production of the Hummer make were ultimately abandoned when GMC was facing bankruptcy. Now, there is a report that GMC is once again working on a Wrangler rival.

There are only a few basic details about the new vehicle that are currently known, as they were recently disclosed by a GMC designer to The Car Guide. What is known for certain is that GMC does not plan to use any of the current frames and auto accessories found in their current line of SUVs for the new off-road model. The vehicle is being built from scratch with its own design. The report did not reveal whether or not the new vehicle will be sold under the Hummer make or the GMC brand or when we might expect to get a first glimpse at the vehicle.

It will be interesting to see what more will be revealed about the off-road model in the months to come. In particular we're curious about what type of car accessories and options the vehicle might include and whether or not GMC is devising a brand new auto lighting look for the vehicle with unique headlights and taillights.

What would your dream off-road competitor for the Jeep Wrangler look like? Tell us about your dream design from the style of the grill to what type of custom headlights you'd love to see in the "Comments" section.
